Welcome
to the first mailing list offering from Lorca!! In this
fall's release, we are introducing a new varietal, a new
vineyard-designated pinot noir to our family of wines, an
opportunity to delve into our library and purchase a three-vintage
vertical of Petite Sirah and, just in time for the holidays,
a couple of gift items.
We
had the pleasure of meeting many of you recently at various
events across the country. The Gourmet Food and Wine Event
in Mill Valley, CA, the Lorca tasting for the National Hockey
League's Minnesota Wild and the St. Paul Press Club in Eagan,
MN (thanks BillyRob!!) and the Southern Wine and Spirits
Event in Longmont, CO were some recent events we attended.
If you would like information regarding any of the upcoming
events or are planning a trip to the Napa Valley, give us
a call or send us an email.
The
weather in the Napa Valley this year has been a little challenging.
Fortunately, we were not adversely affected by the unexpected
late spring freeze. The subsequent alternating hot and cool
weeks were not extreme enough to cause problems and Jon
feels that the grapes ripened nicely. The vines produced
great fruit and the harvest went well.
This
year Monterey County experienced the normal and more consistent
weather pattern that we expect from the region. Consistently
warm and sunny days coupled with cool mornings and evenings
help the ripening process tremendously. This consistency
in the weather is important so that Jon is able to pick
the fruit at precisely the right time. The harvest in Monterey
County has gone well and we should be done shortly.
The
beginning of the 1999 growing season in the Napa Valley
was cooler than normal. Were it not for some exceptional
weather here in late September and October, the 1999 vintage
would have been much less interesting. Last year in Monterey
County the growing season was slightly cooler than normal,
which the vines seemed to like. The fruit set was very heavy
and greater thinning was necessary to preserve fruit quality.
